A fantastic novel and a remarkable film by Jules Dassin. One of the great noir narratives ever, but also a great portrait of 1950s London. Nothing changed really because one gets the same feeling in Gerald Kersh's novel, which was written in the 1930s. A city of many shadows, and hustlers of all types.
