Tom Recchion - "Chaotica" CD, Album, 1996 (Birdman Records)

I treasure Tom Recchion's sensibility.  I tend not to separate his graphic arts work from his work as an artist and composer.  He takes second-hand information, in this case, music from another era, that held promise to the American imagination, which was exotica.   Recchion makes the old recordings and transforms them into new music, but not erasing the music's original purpose.  To transform the listener into another world.  As Exotica music is a tour of the outside world, "Chaotica" is a journey into the inner world.  Exotica brings relaxation, "Chaotica" brings relaxation but with an emotional edge.

There were no overdubs or edits made during the recording.  Recchion used pre-recorded tape-loops and then improvised over the music using keyboards and various digital and analog effects.  "Chaotica" is a relative of Musique Concréte, but with a refined delicacy.   A great album from a brilliant artist.

Tom Recchion Composer LAFMS on Tea With Tosh

My second post for "Tea With Tosh."  I did this show in 1986. My guest for this episode is Tom Recchion.   A composer, visual artist, and the man who designed the graphics for most of my TamTam Books.  Before that happened, I had him on my show.  Here we have the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) roots, as well as Los Angeles art in this show.  Watching it now, I'm so proud of having Tom participate in my program.   It's basically a snapshot of a specific time and place - but alas, I feel very tied to Tom's world personally.  It was a magnificent time with a wonderful person, that is Tom .  - Tosh Berman

Autumn in Peking ARTBOOK | D.A.P. 2012 Catalog TamTam Books Books Exhibition Catalogues 9780966234640

Autumn in Peking

Published by TamTam Books
By Boris Vian. Introduction by Marc Lapprand. Translated Paul Knobloch.

Autumn in Peking takes place in an imaginary desert called Exopotamie, where a train station and a railway line are under construction. Homes are destroyed to lay the lines, which turn out to lead nowhere. In part a satire on the reconstruction of postwar Paris, Vian’s novel also conjures a darker version of Alice in Wonderland.

Detailed Images of "In The Words Of Sparks... Selected Lyrics" F

Left is hand written lyrics by Russell and right is hand written lyrics by Ron

"Whippings and Apologies" and its handwritten lyrics by Ron Mael

"In The Words Of Sparks... Selected Lyrics" is designed by Mark Holley.   Also the photographs above of the book are by Mark as well.   As a long-term Sparks' fan this is probably one of the most proud moments for me as a publisher.  From Boris Vian to Serge Gainsbourg to Guy Debord to Gilles Verlant's great biography on Gainsbourg and later Jacques Mesrine's prison memoir.  And now an original work  from Sparks, and to add, an introduction by Morrissey.  TamTam Books is a dream that came true.  Thank you readers!

Gainsbourg the Biography by Gilles Verlant

The cover of Gainsbourg by Gilles Verlant
Is it fair that the publisher of this book gives it a review? Probably not. But then again I think this is probably the most amazing biography on Serge Gainsbourg. The author, Gilles Verlant, spent over 100 hours interviewing Gainsbourg as well as his family, friends, and other incredible french music/film artists from the 1950's till the early 1990's.

And without a doubt it is the best (and maybe only) book in English that covers the French pop music world in such wonderful detail.  More then half of the book is oral history of Gainsbourg and French pop/film world.  Verlant is very much part of that world, and his access to the French pop stars, Serge's family, and various people around the music world at that time is pretty amazing.  Also in this book you get some of Gainsbourg's brilliant lyrics wonderfully translated by Paul Knobloch.

Press Release for Boris Vian's (Vernon Sullivan) "To Hell With The Ugly"

Boris Vian was the leading light of the Post-War years in Paris. 'The Prince of Saint-Germain' knew everyone that was culturally important in those rich years. From Miles Davis to Jean-Paul Sartre to Jean Cocteau to Juliette Gréco.

Besides being one of the great French novelists of the 20th Century, Vian was also a translator of hard-boiled Amercian crime novels (Raymond Chandler among others), songwriter, singer, A&R man at a record company, engineer, playwrite, jazz critic, screenwriter and sometimes actor. And the leading light of the Saint Germain-des-Prés social scene. A man who knew everyone that was interesting, and yet always stood apart from any organized movement.

“To Hell With The Ugly” is a novel Vian wrote under the name Vernon Sullivan, who had a very serious scandal history with his first Sullivan novel “I Spit On Your Graves.” “To Hell With The Ugly” according to its translator Paul Knobloch is 'like a pornographic Hardy Boys novel set on the Island of Dr. Moreau to a be-bop soundtrack.'

The narration is a mixture of Young Adult adventure novel, science fiction, Los Angeles Noir, and sex romp. A group of adventursome teenagers get involved in a case where a mad doctor has an island of nothing but beautiful looking people. Clones whose purpose is to have sex with good looking people to bring more good looking people on this earth. Utopian dream or nightmare? This novel written in 1948 brings up issues that are proment in today's world. Like an early J.G. Ballard, Vian held the pulse of a culture that was about to embrace the future with teptation, fear and wonder.

Here are the critical blurbs:

“Boris Vian was a rascal, a chameleon, and a visionary. In his crime novles –channeling the elusive Vernon Sullivan—he displays America as a Left Bank fever dream, a place where Dashiell Hammett is president of the Academie and Sartre splits philosophical hairs with Frankie Yale. Go there, and you might not return.”
  • Luc Sante

“Imagine being aught in a dream in which you're still you – with all your complex cmotions, thoughts, and tastes- but the only way you can express them is through the language of a noir novel. Also, your ability to direct your own actions has been removed so the noir begins to tell your story for you, almost against your will. The end result? You are simultaneously a hero and a victim of a genre you never intended to inhabit. Such is the amazing effect of Vian's “To Hell With The Ugly, a novel about – among other things – perfection.”

The Working Cover for Boris Vian's "To Hell With The Ugly" plus special announcement

This is the basic design by Tom Recchion for the cover of the TamTam Books edition of Boris Vian's "To Hell With The Ugly" (ET ON TUERA TOUS LES AFFREUX). This will come out shortly as we fine tune the graphics. Which will also have artwork by Jessica Minckley illustrating this rather naughty narrative.

On top of that, I am going to be putting chapter-by-chapter of "To Hell With The Ugly" on this website. There will be a new chapter every two weeks. Once i put a chapter up, I will remove the previous chapter. So in the sense there will be two versions of this novel. One in the traditional super designed edition with artwork and introduction by its translator Paul Knobloch. And the other as a serial of sorts for this blog. Let me know what you think.

Merci,
Tosh

The Boredoms with 88 Drummers, one of them my designer genius Tom Recchion

The Boredoms from Japan came to Los Angeles with 88 Drummers to do a pretty amazing show last Friday night. The concert took place on 8/8/2008 and the show lasted for 88 minutes. And on top of that my brilliant designer for TamTam Books and super genius composer Tom Recchion was one of the drummers. Do enjoy, but you really have to be there to see 88 set of drum kits. That alone was amazing.
