I always felt that Brian Jones is probably the most underrated figure in 20th Century rock music. I think he got picked on, and wasn't encourage to do more songwriting. Clearly he had talents that was not used, and partly it is his fault, but the image of him just being a stoned-out figure is partly a myth. The recording down below is not a masterpiece, but one suspect that he could have done more music on his own terms. Its a shame that he didn't live, and that he didn't leave more of 'his' music behind for us to listen, enjoy, argue, etc. and etc.
The music here is for the opening credits to a film called "A Degree Of Murder."

nice post…
though while i believe ultimately the brian jones stoned death mystique adds to his legacy, i will argue he is highly underrated as a musician (as opposed to a celebrity)..he was a primary mover in the stones early on..played wicked slide guitar and harmonica…sat at the feet of howlin wolf…and his guitar interweaving with keith are considered amongst the best guitar parts ever recorded…later when he was squeezed out of the jagger -richards songwriting franchise, he still contributed mightily on an array of "other worldly" instruments like dulcimer, marimba, sitar and recorder…many of which "made" the songs they were added to i.e. lady jane, paint it black, under my thumb etc
he was also pivotal in the documenting of the joujouka/gnawa musicians of morocco..a country where his legacy is still held in high esteem amongst the kif mountain musicians
to make matters worse, his beautiful but deadly muse anita p was stolen out from under him by friend and bandmate…
a lot for a dumb young spoiled musician to handle..too bad he wasn't given the chance to "grow out of it"
rip brian jones, joujouka rolling stone
cheers
